A look at the internals of the Gnome Rotary Engine circa 1914. These engines were developed for WW1 fighter aircraft.
The Sopwith Camel running a Gnome Rotary really rocks with the torque effect of the great rotating mass! The early ones had no throttle, so speed was controlled by 'blipping' the magnetos, which made the effect much worse. Difficult to fly!
The Radial was a later development of the Rotary engine. This video shows how a nine cylinder radial works in great detail, and its a real work of art!
